چکیده
It is proved that a large class of distributed tasks cannot be solved in the pr,2s,2nct~ of faulty procc:isor~ Thb, class cmnaills tasks whose unsolvahility ill 111,2 pr,2senc,2 of faalls is knowB (tile cons,211sus task a~ld il!, wltianls, of. Fischer ,21 at. (1985)) as w,dl as some new tasks (e.g., constructing a sF, alming Ire,2). In parlicular, we hitroduce the notion of the decasion graph of a task. and show that cvcry problem whose 4.lcgisioil graph is disconnected cannot be solved in the presence of one faulty processor, By reducing the unsotval)ility of this problem to the un~olvability of tile cons,2nsus problem. The notion of unsolvability us,2d here is very wolff.: We say that a proto`2o! solves a given problem in spite of one hmity pro,.,2ssor if in any execution it sztisfies (i) all nonfauhy processors eventually halt, and (it) if no processor is faulty, it solves the problem, Hence. the unsolvahility of a problem in this model implies its unsolvability in other models appearing in the literature.

Coordination Problems in Distributed Systems (extended Abstract)
In this paper we provide a framework for understanding and comparing various lower bounds and impossibility results concerning the solution to coordination problems like atomic commit for distributed transactions and other consensus problems . The key to our treatment is the distinction between information that is transferred by (datagram) messages and information that can be deduced from the e...

Fault tolerance can be achieved in distributed systems by replication. However, Fischer, Lynch and Paterson have proven an impossibility result about consensus in the asynchronous system model, and similar impossibility results exist for atomic broadcast and group membership. We investigate, with the aid of an experiment conducted in a LAN, whether these impossibility results set limits to the ...
متن کاملDALD:-Distributed-Asynchronous-Local-Decontamination Algorithm in Arbitrary Graphs
Network environments always can be invaded by intruder agents. In networks where nodes are performing some computations, intruder agents might contaminate some nodes. Therefore, problem of decontaminating a network infected by intruder agents is one of the major problems in these networks. In this paper, we present a distributed asynchronous local algorithm for decontaminating a network. In mos...
متن کاملChasing the FLP Impossibility Result in a LAN or How Robust Can a Fault Tolerant Server Be?
Fault tolerance can be achieved in distributed systems by replication. However, Fischer, Lynch and Paterson have proven an impossibility result about consensus in the asynchronous system model. Similar impossibility results have been established for atomic broadcast and group membership, and should be as such relevant for implementations of a replicated service. However, the practical impact of...
متن کاملUsing Failure Detectors to Solve Consensus in Asynchronous Shared-memory Systems 1 Background and Overview of Results
Chandra and Toueg proposed a new approach to overcome the impossibility of reaching consensus in asynchronous message-passing systems subject to crash failures 6]. They augment the asynchronous message-passing system with a (possibly unreliable) failure detector. Informally , a failure detector provides some information about the processes that have crashed during an execution of the system. In...
